In April 2019, Drake declared at a show that he had begun to deal with another collection. In June 2019, Drake prodded the collection through Instagram, where he subtitled a post with "Collection mode".[3] On December 10, 2019, Drake showed up at DaBaby's show in Toronto, where he uncovered that he was chipping away at the collection: "I'ma return to the den and attempt to wrap this collection up so we can turn up in 2020". In March, during an Instagram live meeting with OVO Mark, he affirmed that a finished rendition of the spilled melody "Not Around" would be highlighted on his forthcoming album.[4] That very month, during an Instagram live, Matthew Samuels saw two pieces of tunes with Drake during a Verzuz mind
On May 1, 2020, Drake shock delivered his mixtape Dark Lane Demo Tapes, which was declared only a short time before its delivery. In the mixtape declaration shared on Instagram, Drake uncovered that his 6th studio collection, then, at that point untitled, would be delivered at some point throughout the late spring of 2020.[8] Although the collection was not delivered that late spring, its lead single "Snicker Now Cry Later" including Lil Durk was delivered in August 2020. On October 24, 2020, Drake's 34th birthday celebration, a mystery trailer for the collection was delivered, uncovering that the collection was to be delivered in January 2021. American football wide recipient Odell Beckham Jr. later claimed that the collection would be delivered on January 1, 2021, which was subsequently exposed by Drake as per web character DJ Akademiks.[9] The mystery references fronts of Drake's past collections and mixtapes: So Far Gone (2009), Take Care (2011), Nothing Was the Same (2013) and Dark Lane Demo Tapes (2020).[2]
Regardless of the recently scheduled January 2021 delivery date, on January 20, 2021, Drake said the collection "will not be dropping in January" through his Instagram stories yet noted it would in any case be delivering later in the year.
On March 5, 2021, Drake delivered an all-encompassing play named Scary Hours 2, a spin-off of the 2018 EP, to create further expectation for the impending collection. The EP included three melodies, and included visitor appearances from Lil Baby and Rick Ross. The music video for the EP's lead single, "What's Next", debuted around the same time. Every one of the three melodies from the EP individually appeared at number one, two and three on the Billboard Hot 100.h Hit-Boy. The two scraps were named "I Did" and another bit with Roddy Ricch was named "In The Cut". Drake formally declared his 6th studio collection only hours before the arrival of Dark Lane Demo Tapes, planned for discharge in the late spring of 2020.[5] On another OVOMark live, Drake played two new melodies, one an unreleased track named "Lie To Me" and the other a demo adaptation of his 2020 DJ Khaled coordinated effort "Greece". On July 29, long-term Drake engineer Noel Cadastre uncovered that the collection is "90% done".[6] On August 14, Drake declared the title of the collection.
